Cottages at Shimla

A beautiful plot facing the breathtaking valley of Shimla, was to be designed with 40 luxury cottages. Designing on a heavily contoured site was a tricky piece of work at hand. To maintain the natural slope of the site with minimal cut and fill of the land, cottages were placed on 3 levels, with the lower 2 tiers having 15 cottages each and the top tier having the remaining 10 cottages. The cottages were smartly staggered to provide an unobstructed view of the valley to every cottage. The recreational area is placed at the top above all the cottages, getting a magnificent panoramic view.  

The section of each cottage was worked out in such a way that the view of the valley-view was maximised. Bedroom flanked by a deck faced the spectacular view with bed orientation towards the scenery. 

A cosmic open to sky terrace garden was juxtaposed besides the bedroom to take in the sight of this majestic valley. The first floor was specially planned with a viewing deck for a bird’s-eye sweeping visibility. To maintain the context of local architecture around, a lean-to sloping roof adds to the beauty of the cottages, with the lower end on the back side thus beefing up the openings towards the view. The glass facade and extensive use of wood on the exteriors create a contextual contemporary cloak. 

The interiors hold a white kitchenette with a contrast wooden ceiling and enormous glass openings. The play in the upholstery colours add a pep and zest to the otherwise muted palette.

The skylight in the living area gives in a way to diffused light and further accentuates the wooden panelling below. The bedroom is designed to give a mellow vibe, having an extensive usage of fluted wooden panelling backed by a darker wall in black. A comfortable couch seating with a dapper coffee table is proposed near a large opening to soak in an out of the world perspective outside.
